Because we did. RAW started after the sinking of the Ady Gil. And because it is right to protect whales in a whale sanctuary near us from needless, endless slaughter. We care, you don't obviously.
I personally am very passionate about other animal abuse issues - Moon Bears in particular ( for which I organised 2 fundraising gigs for back in the day - one of which may have saved my life...avoiding a serious truck crash) - and whales are cool, so why wouldn't we protect them.

There are plenty of initiatives aimed at 'Saving animals that don't provide heaps of food'. I doubt ya'd get much off the drumsticks from a Chatham Island Black Robin. And all that's eating the Giant Skinks up at Macraes Flat is the occasional feral cat. Giant weta? crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, but still only a mouthful. And from what the Shackleton, Mawson & co wrote, penguins taste pretty damn vile.

None of which stops some of us from trying to stop other people from adding them to the extinction list.
