After playing numerous shows around New Zealand Knives at Noon, Bang! Bang! Eche! and The Checks finally arrived to end their Get Off the Stage Tour in the rainy city of Dunedin. We arrived at the awful and unpleasant venue known as 10Bar, where the overpriced drinks were flowing ($7 for a handle- you have got to be joking) and a crowd was beginning to form.

Local band [Knives at Noon] were first to take the stage on the worst makeshift stage we have ever seen. Just before [Knives at Noon] came on, lead singer Tim McCartney came out of the 10bar toilets clad in the worst tights ever created, zebra print. He told us that it was a bet with band mate Oli Wilson (synths) apparently he had said that he would wear them on stage if Oli bought them, “they were like, fifty bucks!” Anyway, he bravely went on stage with the monstrosities and rocked into opener ‘Thunderveins’. By the time the second song began to play there were more people up on the dance floor and when crowd favourites like ‘Heat Up’ and ‘Daisychain’ played halfway through the set the crowd were definitely starting to get amongst it. A couple of new songs were also played that night, we enjoyed most of them but the one song we have ALWAYS had an issue with is ‘Licking Plastic’. Attempting to dance to ‘Licking Plastic’ was a little like actually licking plastic, not very enjoyable. And it must have been hell for the lighting technician to try and co-ordinate the constant stopping and starting parts of the vocals and the music because it was quite difficult to dance to and in the end we all felt a little bit defeated and sat down. The new tracks that were played were a definite taster of all the good stuff that’s to come when the band will release a new set of songs in late January.
