I've never been to Last night of the Proms. I wasn't sure what what it'd
be like. When I arrived it was quite light hearted with a mime doing tricks
for kids before it started. Most people were dressed in English gear with
British flags and with hats with the Union Jack on them. Also the Town Hall
was draped in British and New Zealand flags.
The prom started with great classical music. The two sopranos were
outstanding. They sang Delibes Flower Duet, Lakme flawlessly (you would
have heard it - check on youtube), almost like a CD. After this flawless
rendition one soprano was given a large bouquet of flowers while the other
soprano got a tiny bunch. This caused a hilarious cat fight, with the
soprano who only got one bunch pining in cats meows for the sopranos huge
bouquet. The other soprano meowed in a mocking tone back at her.
The MC made some jokes about the stadium and then the mayor took the
stand. The mayor laughed that the jokes about the stadium made him feel he
was in a council meeting. He then went on about the refurbishment of the
Regent Theatre.
The second half started and everything got patriotic. The choir all
arranged themselves in blue, red and white colors and some draped
themselves in the British flag while others had plastic English bowler
hats. I was on the top deck and we were given streamers to throw down when
they sang Land of Hope and Glory. When this played everyone was in full
voice, throwing streamers down and waving their British flags. It was
very moving. By the time of Rule Britannia was playing the mood was
infectious and I started singing with gusto waving my flag and throwing
streamers down off the balcony. Then the sopranos came out again and this
time they were wearing dresses with the Union Jack on it, almost Austin
Powers style.
At the end we all sang Auld Lang Syne with everyone holding the hands of
the other next to with the audience swaying to the tune and it was a great
way for the night to end. A very great night.
