Sunley is a solo artist with numerous influences and a warm, country-centred sound. You can catch Sunley playing solo or with anywhere from one to six others in the Sunley band.
Evan began seriously producing music as a soloist in 1995 under the moniker The Loveslater. After three 18 track cassette-only albums, 1995's Julysunder, 1996's Bewildercator and in 1997, Loveslater III, he underwent a titular transformation and became simply Evan. Evan released two EPs, Evan01 in 1998 and Irreversible in 1999, achieving national airplay via the b.Net radio network and a track on NZ On Air's Indie Hit Disc series.
After this, Evan concentrated on his electronic project and rock bands, while keeping his hand in playing the odd acoustic night.
Behind closed doors, however, a musical phoenix was rising. Evan's first gigs as Sunley were played as acoustic sets at the Wellington venue Bodega. But at home, the Sunley project was taking shape as the combination of Evan's acoustic folk roots and various electronic influences.
In early 2004, the first Sunley release popped out of the door of San Marino studios: a six track EP entitled Broken Songs. The EP was the result of four years worth of collected recording and reworking, featuring strong industrial electronic influences intertwined with sweet melodies and leftfield song structures and production techniques.
From Broken Songs, the snarling and desperate 'The Break' received significant airplay on Dunedin's Radio One.
In late 2006, Sunley released his second EP, for those that mean the world, an EP far more centred on the singer/songwriter script, yet still retaining a slightly twisted production approach. From this EP, the track "Over the Moon" achieved critical acclaim.
From 2007 onwards, Sunley has built a repertoire around a whiskey-fuelled alt-country sound, combining the singer/songwriter folk elements and touches of bossa nova and rock'n'roll, laying solo and with anywhere from one to six others in the Sunley Band. The as-yet untitled Sunley album is due for release in July 2009.
